The Storm

we got hit with a pretty bad storm a couple of days ago. it came out of nowhere and totally caught us my surprise. the sky started getting dark and we could hear thunder in the distance. I went out to take some pictures and saw the dark clouds moving faster and closer. the wind picked up and nearly blew me off my feet. then we lost power. my main concern was the basement. without power our sump pump can't work. luckily the ground was so dry that we had no problems with flooding.

when it finally died down, we heard the sirens. we weren't sure what happened. was it a tornado? funnel clouds? or just really strong winds and rain. the top half of our tree snapped and our patio furniture was all over the place. unfortunately, it's one or our nice trees. why couldn't it have been one of the ugly trees. or our next door neighbor's dead tree that is just 10 feet from the tree that snapped. the neighbor's (two houses down) pool toy was in our other tree.
my parents live two miles south of me and they were also without power with hardly any damage. my sister lives one mile west of me and they still had their power but just as much damage in their neighborhood as us.
the next day, we were still without power. I got up and went to Panera's for coffee. I was driving through one of the hardest hit areas which is only one mile southwest of me. the Lifetime Fitness seemed to be in the center of it all. they lost a lot of trees. the florist nearby lost their roof and the wooden fences along Hayes were torn down. store signs were blasted and knocked down. it looked like a war zone driving through.
when I went into work later, which is three miles from my house, there was no sign of a storm. I could see the path of the storm based on the areas of destruction. I'm still not sure what it was. by the time we got power and I had a chance to hear any news, it was old news. I've been told different versions by different people. one said that nine funnel clouds touched down in the area. someone else said it was only strong winds and "sideways" rain. Bill was able to catch a little news and he heard that a tornado did in fact touch down at 22 Mile and Hayes which is less than a mile from our house.

wow! That's scary... a lot of damage if it was just a storm. I'm glad you didn't get any flooding, and only some tree damage (even if it was one of your nice ones).
